Burlington - William Lester Gibson, 79, went home to be with the Lord surrounded by his family, following a 22 year battle with Parkinsons on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at Liberty Commons. A native of Randolph County, he was born October 20, 1937 to the late Rufus Riley and Texie Turner Gibson and was the husband of 54 years to the late Jessie Irene Bowman Gibson.
Lester served in the US Army and was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. He worked for Max Clapp Office Furniture, Shoffner Industries and was an insurance agent for Pilot Life. Lester was an avid UNC Tarheel fan, a NY Yankees fan and passionately pulled for the Chevrolet cars during all the NASCAR races. He and his wife Irene were members of the Cactus Squares, a square dancing club in Graham. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Anita Ruth Gibson; brothers, Leonard Gibson, Lonnie Gibson and Lynn Gibson; sisters, Faye Osborne and husband Dale, Sylvia Watkins and husband John and Kay Wilden and husband Richard; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family that he deeply loved. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; brothers, Lee Gibson, Larry Gibson and Lloyd Gibson; sisters, Betty Carver and Glenda King and a special Mother-in-law, Ruth Kellam Bowman Phillips.
A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 2:00pm on Friday, March 24, 2017 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church by Rev. Dr. Barry Lemons and Rev. Lee Ellis with the burial to follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Gibson will remain at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory until being taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory from 6-8pm Thursday and other times at the home of Robert Bowman; 3204 NC Hwy 62 East, Liberty, NC.
