William Cobb “Bud” Shields, 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at home.
Born in Person County, NC, grew up in Mebane, NC and moved to Burlington in 1964. He was the son of the late Rawleigh Thomas Shields and Martha Ellen Briggs Shields.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years Faye Conklin Shields, son; Rawleigh Thomas Shields II and wife Tammy of Gibsonville, Daughter; Leslie Tenille Shields of High Point and fiancé Dennis Brantley, grandchild, Lindsay – Blair Shields, sisters; Rosalie Craine of Burlington and Nancy Wyrick of Greensboro, three nephews, two nieces and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Clarice Thomasine Shields Reichl, brother; Samuel Perry Shields and a brother-in-law; Jim Wyrick.
Bud was a graduate in the class of 1959 from Mebane High School. He then served his country in the United States Navy 1959-1965. While in the Navy he served on the USS Bremerton (CA-130), USS Yorktown (CV-10) and was stationed at the Naval Base in Guam.
Bud retired from the Burlington Police Department with 26 years of service to the community. While he was with the department, he worked in several areas including Traffic, Patrol, Juvenile and Youth Divisions. During his time with the police department he earned his degrees in Criminal Justice and Administrative Science at Guilford College, Greensboro, NC.
Bud was also known as “Officer Bill” in a program talking to elementary school children, Kindergarten through second grade students aimed at helping children understand police work.
Bud was a member of Bula Lodge 409 and was of the Baptist faith. He also had a membership in several law enforcement organizations and was a Benefactor member of the NRA.
The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Brandon Rouse with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 prior to the service on Tuesday.
