William "Bill" Lloyd Knapp, 79 went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at his home. He was the husband of 55 years to Ethel Ogburn Knapp who survives. Bill retired after 21 years as a Staff Sergeant with the US Air Force and he later retired after 20 years as a Park Ranger with Alamance County Parks and Recreation Department. Bill was instrumental in helping with the development of Cedar Rock Park. Bill was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church and the Reliable Sunday School Class. He was actively involved at his church in the Nursing Home Ministry and also served in the past as a Deacon. Bill enjoyed wood working and playing golf in his spare time. He was an outdoorsman who had a deep respect for nature and God's creation. Bill will best be remembered for his love of people and he demonstrated that love by helping anyone in need. Survivors include his wife, Ethel O. Knapp of the home; daughter, Janet Marine and husband, Raymond of Burlington; sons, Ed Knapp of Oxford, North Carolina and James Craig Knapp and wife, Phyllis of Georgetown, Texas; four grandchildren, Heather Knapp, Ethan Knapp, William Brian Marine and Cameron Marine; sisters, Elsie Arwood of Los Angeles, California, Shirley Harrison of Emporia, Virginia and Carol Moon and husband, Bill of Florence, South Carolina; brothers, Robert Knapp and his companion, Nancy of Charlottesville, Virginia, Victor Knapp and wife, Virginia of Meyer, Arizona and Don Knapp and wife, Karla of Richmond, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Campbell and Leda Souva Knapp; sisters, Evelyn Alcott, Eleanor Miller and Peggy Tench and a brother, John Knapp. A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Hunsinger, Rev. Bill Vickrey and Dr. Garry Baldwin. The burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park with military honors provided by the US Air Force. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 pm prior to the service at the church on Saturday and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
