Gibsonville, NC Wilkes "Wilkie" Thomas Hughes, Jr., age 67, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Moses Cone Hospital surrounded by his family. He was a native of Guilford County and the husband of 42 years to Edwina "Ed" Thompson Hughes who survives. Wilkie worked for many years as an auto mechanic and was a member of First Baptist Church of Gibsonville. He attended Glen Raven Baptist Church in recent years and was a member of the Moose Lodge and the American Legion. Wilkie enjoyed athletics and played almost every sport during his high school years. Many of his friends and family will remember his gift of story telling and will keep that as a special memory of Wilkie. Fishing was also one of Wilkie's favorite pastimes.. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Edwina "Ed" Thompson Hughes of the home; sons, Gregory Scott Hughes and his wife, Trish of Elon and Thomas "Tommy" Shane Hughes of the home; grandchildren, Andrew Curtis and his wife, Kayla, Lindsey Curtis, and Brooke Henry; great grandchildren, Landon Curtis and Logan Curtis; and a sister, Jane Blythe and her husband, Mike of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Paige Thompson Hughes and his parents, Wilkes Thomas Hughes, Sr. and Ruth Isley Hughes. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am Monday, March 5, 2012 at Glen Raven Baptist Church by Pastor Bobby Fann and Rev. Hobert Isley. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
