Wiley Eugene "Gene" Caulberg, 76, of Laurie Drive, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the Hospice Home. He was born in Wake County to the late Roland Caulberg and Elnora Caulberg Woodall. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the American Legion and was of the Baptist faith. He completed his undergraduate degree and masters degree at East Carolina University. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society at ECU. He was a special education teacher who retired after teaching in Alamance county for 17 years and was awarded the ARC Teacher of the Year in 1981. Prior to that, he taught in Bladen, Beaufort, and Vance counties. Gene enjoyed fishing, gardening, building things, watching birds and watching the stock market. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Westbrook Caulberg of the home; daughters, Celeste Nettles and her husband Richard of Greensboro, Heather Caulberg and her fianc Steve Guest of Hillsborough; special granddaughter, Katherine and a sister, Betty Jackson of Raleigh. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bill, Tom, Bob, and Wade; and a sister, Ruby Hunsucker. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
