James Wayne Kernodle, 96, of Elon, NC passed away at his home Saturday morning, January 18, 2025.
Known to all as Wayne, he was born on May 26, 1928. A native and lifelong resident of Alamance County, he was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Altamahaw.Wayne was the son of the late Roy and Sallie Jones Kernodle. He was married to JoAnn Lowe Kernodle for 43 years, before her passing in 1997.
Wayne was a veteran of the U.S. Army in the 424th Field Artillery Battalion serving in the Korean War. He attended many of their army reunions and enjoyed catching up with his buddies. He was a career electrician for Western Electric and retired from Burlington Industries. He enjoyed gardening and was very active in the farming community serving as a member of the Alamance County Farm Club. He and his late wife JoAnn enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Shallowford Square Dance Club. Wayne was known for his talented woodworking abilities and he loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include sons Barry Kernodle (Cindy) and Benny Kernodle; grandchildren Justin Kernodle (Ashley), Brandon Kernodle (Shaina), Morgan Robinson (Bradyn), and Ashley Kernodle (Kamron); Great grandsons Tyler and Hunter Kernodle and Easton Robinson; Sisters Laura Jane K. McPherson and Nancy K. Sain.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Bill Kernodle of Salisbury and Staley Kernodle of Elon.
A service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, January 21 at 2 pm at Bethlehem Christian Church with a visitation prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45.A graveside service will follow with military honors by the US Army. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the fellowship hall of the church. Check the church’s website for live stream availability.
