Walter Jasper Gurkin, age 76, of Snow Camp, passed away at 7:20am Thursday, November 25, 2010 at his home. A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Sue Sutton Gurkin and son of the late W.J. and Louise Brooks Gurkin. Walter was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He had been an electrician for Watson Electric and Alamance Electric and later retired from West Point Stevens. Walter was well known for his tenor voice. He began singing in public at age 14. Over his career in gospel music, he sang with the Masters Quartet, The Visionairs, The Noblemen, Called Out, New King's Way and more recently he organized a group named Sheltered. Survivors include his wife Sue Sutton Gurkin of the home and his brother, Jerry Gurkin and wife Sandy of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Douglas Gurkin and Larry Gurkin. A Celebration of Walter's Life will be held at 2:00pm Sunday November 28, 2010 at Burlington Assembly of God by Rev. Howard Thompson and Rev. David Jackson. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. Mr. Gurkin will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory until being taken to the church to lie in state for 30 minutes, prior to the funeral service. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 5-7pm Saturday and at other times at the home of Ida and Ron Stephens, 3082 Heritage Lane, Burlington, NC. The family would like to thank Dr. Pandit and all the nurses at the ARMC Cancer Center and the Hospice nurses for the care given to Walter.
