Burlington - Vernon Eugene Swinney, 81 of Burlington went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. He was born in Alamance County to the late Rev. George W. Swinney and Etta Gay Dalton Swinney and was married to Judith Dale Swinney, who survives. Vernon was co-owner of Glencoe Carpet Mill and was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and competed professionally in fishing tournaments. Vernon was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife; children, Tommy Swinney and wife Elizabeth of Greensboro, Kim Walker and husband Steve of Winston-Salem, Linda Spivey and husband Chris of Kernersville and Scott Swinney of West Chester, OH; stepsons, William Dixon and Scott Dixon; grandchildren, Christopher Spivey and wife Kristy, Frances Anne Spivey, Andrew Swinney and Trevor Dixon; siblings, Clarence Swinney and wife Kitty, Hazel Burke Jarrett and husband Ralph, Rev. Don Swinney and wife Jane, Yvonne Van Hoy and husband B. H. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Irene Swinney Vaughn. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Larry Redding and Rev. Don Swinney. The family will receive friends from 12:00 1:45 Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of White Oak Manor for taking such good care of Mr. Swinney.
