Vernon Braxton Long, 85, of 2259 Lee Dr. went home to be with the Lord Friday July 10, 2009 at Duke University Medical Center. He was married to Dorothy McClain Long for 67 years. He was born July 13, 1923 in Orange County, NC to the late Samuel Jones and Mary Effie Long. Vernon was a graduate of Burlington High School and a veteran of WWII. He was a past member of the Burlington Civitan Club, Greensboro Chapter of Barbershop Music, and a longtime member of Alamance Senior Golf Association. The part of his golf game he was proudest of was the seven hole-in-ones, a feat all golfers hope to attain. He was a member of Grove Park Baptist Church for over fifty years and served in many positions in the church. After military service he returned to Burlington working for a local parts jobber before going into business for himself. He started Longs Auto Supply which was Burlington's only mobile auto parts jobber calling on service stations, garages & dealers. His slogan "You won't go wrong, waiting for Long" was known through out the county. After being in business from 1956 to 1998 he retired. Survivors include his wife of the home, daughters, Rosemary Pike of Gibsonville, Cindy David Dixon of Mebane, grandchildren, Lindsay Pike, Kelly Pike and Josh Stephanie Dixon. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Dr. Matthew Long, DVM and Bruce Long. The funeral will be held 2:00 PM Sunday at Grove Park Baptist Church by Dr. Gene Hunsinger and Mr. Bill Vickrey. Interment will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc. 6-8 PM Saturday and at other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to Grove Park Baptist Church, 108 Trail One, Burlington, NC 27215.
