Velna Greeson

Velna Jean Jones Greeson, 84, of Julian passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Clare Bridge of Brookdale. She was born in Guilford County and was the daughter of the late Ira Clarence Jones, Sr. and the late Velna Georgia Shoffner Jones. She was married for 62 years to Dewey Wade Greeson who died in June 2016.
Mrs. Greeson retired from Nathanael Greene Elementary School where she taught kindergarten. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ where she was very active in the music ministry for over 50 years having served as choir member, choir director, pianist and organist. She was also a two time breast cancer survivor.
She is survived by her sons, Byron (Kristen) Greeson and Neal (Lynn) Greeson; grandsons, Dalton, Wade and Joshua; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings, George David Jones, Sr., Henry Floyd Jones, Ira Clarence Jones, Jr., Harry Crawford Jones, Jack Michael Jones, Edith Irene Shoffner, Blondie Louise Greeson, Nellie Mae Jones and Mary Frances Jones.
The funeral will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ by Rev. Kristin Gerner Vaughn and Rev. Lynne Hinton with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:45 Saturday at the church prior to the service.
The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to the doctors, nurses and staff at Clare Bridge and at Hospice of Alamance-Caswell.
