Thomas E. Haynes, age 89 b. May 16, 1922, of 3742 Luther Ct Burlington NC, beloved husband of Jean V. Haynes nee Heiberg for 62 years; cherished father of Charles E. Wilma of St. Michael, MN, Christine Winsberg Dale of Cleveland Hts., OH, Carolyn deceased of Anchorage, AL, Thomas R. Andrea of Apex, NC and Michael G. Becky of Chicago, IL; much loved grandfather of Molly, Sarah, Leah, Alex, Ethan, Margo, Steven, Kyle and Madison. Brother of Henry Haynes, uncle and dear friend to many. He grew up in California, was an Eagle Scout, and earned his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering at the U. of California Berkeley and a Masters in Business Administration from Stanford University. He worked briefly for NASA when it started, at Ocracoke Island, NC. Tom was a voracious reader, a talented gymnast and an accomplished pianist who considered a professional career and whose music filled his home with Beethoven, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Scott Joplin. Tom served as a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in WWII and as a reservist in the Korean War. In Toms long work career, he taught briefly at USC Statistics then worked for the U.S. Government in the Foreign Aid program in the Philippines , as a Management Consultant for Booz, Allen & Hamilton in Chicago and Cleveland and then held the position of Vice President for Planning at Cleveland State University , where he retired in 1987. He was a Mason and a Shriner, Tom was an active member and sang in the choir of Garfield Memorial Church in Ohio and served on the Orange School Board, including a term as Board President. He was a Boy Scout troop and council leader. Tom retired to North Carolina with Jean in 1988 where they lived and played golf and bridge in Carolina Trace Sanford, where he was on the Board and more recently at Twin Lakes retirement community in Burlington, NC. Memorial service will be held at 2pm on Monday Aug 29 at Twin Lakes Chapel and will be followed by a reception at the Peppertree at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance County or the Cancer Center of the Alamance Regional Medical Center.
