Elon – Thelma Louise King Oakes, 86, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021 at the Hospice Home after two months of declining health. She was born in Rockingham County on January 9, 1935 to the late William Monroe King and Addie Lou Duggins King, and was married to the late Roy Oakes who died in 2003.
Thelma retired from Hickory Springs in High Point, but in her earlier years she was employed with Frito Lay for 19 years and was a former employee with Cone Mills-Minneola Plant in Gibsonville. She was a member of Kerrs Chapel Baptist Church, she enjoyed word search puzzles and most of all she loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Willie (Wanda) Light, Mike (Darlene) Light, Kathy Loy and Timmy (Terri) Light; 9 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; a sister, Linda (Wayne) Tucker; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Light; numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son, Jesse Earl Light; grandson, David Michael Light; great grandchildren, Trina Sheppard and Patrick Venable; 9 brothers and 2 sisters.
The memorial service will be held at 11:00am Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Paul Traywick. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Kerrs Chapel Baptist Church, 2980 Kerr’s Chapel Road, Elon NC 27244 or to the Hospice Home, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington NC 27215.
