Sylvia Jean Songer Thompson, 84, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, September 24, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. God welcomed her home with open arms. She had just celebrated her 84th birthday the day before and her family was so blessed to share that time with her.
Jean was born in Giles County, Virginia on September 23, 1939 to the late Wirt Songer and Beulah Osborne Songer, and was a loving wife of 63 years to Rev. Harold Kenneth Thompson who survives. Jean was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and a faithful example of God’s love by being a wonderful source of strength and encouragement to her family.
Jean retired after 17 years with Seaboard Underwriters and was a minister’s wife for over 51 years, helping and supporting her husband in the ministry. She was a member of Whitehall Evangelical Methodist Church, a former Atlantic District Evangelical Methodist Church Women’s President and Gibsonville EMC Women’s President. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, and she adored her grandchildren.
Survivors other than her husband, Rev. Harold Thompson include her children, Michele Thompson Montgomery and Kenneth Michael Thompson; grandchildren, Ray Montgomery III and Chloe Montgomery; brother, Randy Songer and wife Marilyn; and several nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved son-in-law, Raymond Lewis Montgomery, Jr.
The celebration of life service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by her husband, Rev. Harold Thompson. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 10:45am Saturday prior to the service.
