Snow Camp– Sue Sutton Gurkin, 85, of Snow Camp, went to be with the Lord after a brief illness. She was surrounded by family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Lenneous Lee Sutton and Ruby Montina Smith; sister to the late Mary Ida Sutton Stephens; and wife of the late Walter Jasper Gurkin.
Sue worked in the food industry her whole life. She started working for A&P Grocery in the Meat Department at the age of 19 until they closed their doors. She worked for Byrd’s Grocery as the District Deli Manager, Ronco Corp. as well as co-owned Sweets and More in Burlington.
She was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church. Enjoyed fishing with her sisters, working in her garden and loved traveling with her husband who was a gospel singer.
She is survived by one sister; Phyllis Fogleman and husband, Max of Burlington; two brothers, Mike Sutton and wife, Donna of Florida, Riley Sutton and wife Judy who passed in 2021 of Concord. She had numerous nieces, nephews and cousins that loved her very much. Being she was the oldest, she was like a mother to her younger siblings as well as the rest of her family. Her kind, gentle giving spirit will be missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her.
The family would like to acknowledge the nurses and staff at Authoracare Hospice and Libby Fogleman for their care and would also like to remember Sue’s friend Ralph Crumpton.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Jackson. The burial with follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:45 prior to the service at the funeral home.
