Sonia Derboghossian Powell, age 80, peacefully passed away on February 24, 2025, at Moses Cone Hospital. Born in Cairo, Egypt, she was the cherished daughter of the late Loris and Ovasanna Derboghossian. Sonia was married to the late Assadour Antreassian, who passed away in 1993 and later to Clem Payton Powell, who preceded her in death in 2003.
Sonia’s Armenian heritage was a source of great pride for her, and she often fondly reminisced about her deep roots. Sonia dedicated many years of her life to the Alamance-Burlington School System before her retirement. She had a passion for reading, traveling, working on word puzzles and she found great joy in visiting the beach. The beauty of the ocean, with its sound and smell, held a special place in her heart. Most importantly, Sonia adored spending time with her family, and loved her beloved grand dog, Rusty.
Sonia is survived by her loving daughters, Leiza Antreassian Bouroujian and her husband Yeghia, and Seza Antreassian Aldrich and her husband Josh. She also leaves behind her beloved granddaughter, Sosy Bouroujian; her sister-in-law, Nora Derboghossian; and her extended family, Maral Derboghossian along with her daughters, Celine and Alexandra Derboghossian. Sonia was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Arto Derboghossian and a nephew, Shant Derboghossian.
The family plans to hold a memorial service to celebrate Sonia’s life on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 11:00AM, at St. James Armenian Church, 834 Pepper Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23226.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice. Please visit www.lowefuneralhome.com to share your condolences and memories.
