Mrs. Shirley Ann Turner Alexander, age 79, of Elon, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several months of failing health.
Born in Caswell County, she was the daughter of the late George Dudley Turner and the late Minnie Walker Turner and was married for over 54 years to Joe Carroll Alexander, who survives. Shirley graduated in 1956 from Elon College High School, where she was the Salutatorian for her class and was a star basketball player. She attended Elon College and was employed with the Burlington Merchant Association and Western-Electric. Shirley and her family enjoyed an adventurous life, enjoying the various diverse cultures of the many places that they resided, including; Rantoul, IL, Mountain Home, ID, Burlington, NC, Lawrenceville, NJ, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, Roseville, CA, San Jose, CA, Long Valley, NJ, and Snow Camp, NC before settling in Elon in 2009. She had a very spirited personality and enjoyed quilting, painting and gardening.
Mrs. Alexander is survived by her husband of the home; three children, Kim Alexander of Chapel Hill, Brenda Mitchell and her husband, Colin, of Sacramento, CA and Steve Alexander of Burlington; a grandson, Andrew Mitchell; and a sister, Lorene Lyon of Burlington. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, George "Doug" Turner.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the residence.
