Sharon Carter

Mrs. Sharon Lane Arwood Carter, 61, transitioned Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born in Charlotte, she moved to Burlington when she was nine and graduated as valedictorian from Southern Alamance High School in 1973.

Sherry, as she was known to friends and family, dedicated her life to serving others. She
received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, graduating summa cum laude and finishing second in the class of 1977. As a neonatal intensive care nurse at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, Sherry tended to the most vulnerable newborns and saved countless lives. She also taught as a clinical instructor in nursing at Alamance Community College. Sherry traveled on several missions to the Dominican Republic as a member of Healing the Children, assisting with ocular diagnostics and surgery. She became Alamance County's first wildlife rehabilitator in 1989 and served as a board member and medical consultant for Kindred Spirits Wildlife Center beginning in 1991. Sherry also wrote humorous stories and local features for City-County Magazine.

Sherry is survived by her husband, Billy, with whom she celebrated their 40th anniversary on May 15; her son, Dr. Scott A. Carter, and his wife Katherine Carter McEnaney; and her sisters, Dr. Debra Clare and husband Dr. James Clare, and Dr. Laura Arwood. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Alexander and Bertie Taylor Arwood. She also leaves behind loving memories for her special sisters, Lorraine, Debra, Betsy, Linda and Dana.

A private service was held at Lowe Funeral Home on Thursday, July 21. A lifelong advocate of education, Sherry requested that those wishing to honor her life contribute to an education fund for a child or loved one in lieu of flowers or other memorials.
