Whitsett - Samuel Gordon Woodard, 85, died at his home on Wednesday, February 1, 2006. He was born in Guilford County, son of the late Samuel Rankin and Minnie Lowe Woodard. He was a retired employee from the City of Greensboro and was a member of Mt. Hope United Church of Christ . Gordon was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII where he served in the Philippines and was wounded in combat which earned him the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Doris Edwards Woodard of the home; daughter, Marie Woodard Butler of Greensboro; sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Sylvia Woodard of Greensboro, Orville and Sandy Woodard of Stoneville; grandchildren, Michelle LaFata, Brent Woodard, Brittany Butler, Mandy Leach and Marsha Sprouse; 6 great grandchildren and a stepsister, Pat Woodard McGhee and her husband Nolan of McLeansville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nola Greeson Woodard and his parents. The funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 4, 2006 at Mt. Hope United Church of Christ by Rev. Dr. Walter Patten and Rev. John Settlemyre. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, ARMC Cancer Center, 1236 Huffman Mill Rd., Suite 1050, Burlington, NC 27215 or to the Joshua Frase Foundation, 124 Crossroad Lakes Drive, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
