Sallie Jean Wilkins Hambright of Mebane NC, passed away peacefully in her home on May 15, 2018, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren. She had battled Type I diabetes and subsequent multiple health issues including strokes, in the most recent years.
From her birth in Cherokee County, SC on August 5, 1951, and until her death, Sallie was known for her contagious energy, her natural beauty and her generous hospitality. Growing up in Blacksburg, SC, she was a 1969 graduate of Blacksburg High School. Sallie went on to graduate from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC, with a B.A. in psychology. Having met in grade-school, on June 10, 1972, she and Robbie Dale Hambright of Cherokee Falls, SC, married in Charleston, SC at the Citadel Chapel. Shortly after, Sallie began her careful life-work as a dedicated homemaker. Robbie and Sallie's relentless love for each other helped raise four children: Julie Hambright Williams, Natalie Bree, Matthew Wilkins Hambright, and Drew Elliot Hambright, first in Gastonia, NC, then in Burlington, NC where they later relocated. Her life-long commitment was to nourishing not only her children, but the community in which they participated. Known for her love of all things simple and her attention to detail, she is remembered by many as creative, encouraging and determined. Sallie Hambright will always hold a special place on the bleachers for any Western Alamance High School football game, rain or shine.
In addition to her spouse, Sallie is also survived by all four children and their spouses (Jonathan, Brook & Kimberly), her father George H. Wilkins, Sr., four brothers (George, Bruce, Philip & Stephen) and their families, and her 10 grandchildren: Jacob, Gracen Rose, Juliette, Titus, Luke, Owen, Joy Yael, Molly, Daphne & Case.
