Burlington – Ruth Wright Sykes, 93 went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the Hospice Home. She was born in Guilford County to the late William “Bill” Talton Wright and Thelma Lorene Conklin Wright Oakley. She was the wife of 71 years to James “Jody” Lacy Sykes who survives.
Ruth retired from Western Electric/AT & T after 41 years. Ruth was the first woman president of the Old North State Chapter. Ruth graduated from Burlington High School in 1944. She was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church for over 65 years and served faithfully as an assistant Sunday School teacher, nursery worker, and choir member among many other acts of service. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and “Aunt Ruth.” A beautiful soul who loved her family unconditionally and always put others before herself.
She is survived by her husband, James “Jody” Lacy Sykes of the home; daughter, Joan Troxler and husband, Craig of Burlington; grandchildren, Jamie (Jay) Wrenn, Jonathan (Adrian) Sykes, Jessica (Michael) Fellows and Morgan Troxler; great grandchildren, Josiah Wrenn, Jaedyn Wrenn, Jameson Sykes, Anna Rose Sykes, Hayden Fellows and Harper Fellows; daughter-in-law, Patricia Laney Sykes of Georgia; son-in-law, Larry Warren of Graham. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Jo Ellen Warren and a son, James “JR” Sykes; her brother, William E. “Eddie” Wright and her sister-in-law, Alice Troxler Wright.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at 11:00am at Glen Hope Baptist Church by Rev. Lewis Baber, Rev. Bob Stephenson, Rev. Benny Smith and Rev. Jim Wrenn. The family will receive friends from 9:45-10:45 am prior to the service and other times at the home. The entombment will be at Alamance Memorial Park. Her body will be available for for public viewing from 12 noon until 5:00pm on Monday at the funeral home.
