Burlington- Russell Vernon Morton, 82, of Burlington died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Alamance Hospice Home in Burlington. He was the husband of Hallie Apple Morton to whom he was married 60 wonderful years. He was born July 17, 1923 in Altamahaw to the late Junius E. and Sallie P. Morton. He graduated from Altamahaw-Ossipee High School. Mr. Morton was self-employed as a rural route carrier for the Times News until his retirement. He was an active and faithful member of Grove Park Baptist Church for 50 years where he served as Deacon and as a Sunday School teacher. Mr. Morton was a member of the Exchange Club and an Officer for the Burlington Coin Club. He was affiliated with the , Woodman of the World and was in fellowship with the Masonic Order at the Tabasco Lodge in Gibsonville. He was a proud WWII veteran, attaining the rank of Corporal. Mr. Morton served in the 114th Infantry. He fought in the Middle Eastern European African Theater where he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service. Survivors including his wife includes two daughters, Jan Morton Humphrey and her husband, Robert, of Livonia, MI.; Pam Morton Norwood and her husband, the Reverend Dr. Phillip Norwood of Jamestown, NC, a son, the Reverend David V. Morton and his wife, Linda, of Mt. Airy, Maryland. Mr. Morton has six grandchildren, Elizabeth Moore, Catherine Humphrey, Abigail Laurent, Christopher Norwood, Laura Morton, and Lee Morton; and three great grandchildren, Zoe, Helen, Lily Moore Mr. Morton is survived by three sisters, Hazel M. Robertson of Burlington, Peggy M. Wilson of Elon, and Alyse M. Simpson of Elon. The funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Grove Park Baptist Church by his son, Chaplain David Morton, Dr. Eugene Hunsinger, the Reverend Dr. Phillip Norwood, and the Reverend Travis Styles. Burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The body will lie in state from 1:00-2:00 PM at the church. Visitation will be Saturday, June 10, 2006 from 6-8 PM at Lowe Funeral Home. The family desires that memorials be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd.
