Elon, NC Royden Alfred Jacobus Roy Jacobus, 69, of Elon, NC, died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at his home. He was born on March 27, 1941, in Newark, NJ, the son of the late Royden Everett Jacobus and Alice Jennette Reed Jacobus. Mr. Jacobus is survived by his wife of 47 years Nancy Craven Jacobus, daughter Cheryl Jacobus Herman Richard of High Point, NC, son Brett E. Jacobus Lisa of Burlington, NC, granddaughters Sarah and Caroline Herman and Lauren and Emily Jacobus, brothers Earl R. Jacobus and Robert L. Jacobus Caroline, sister Carole Jacobus Barrett, and several nieces and nephews. He graduated from Lafayette College, in Easton, PA, in 1963, with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and from Northeastern University, in Boston, MA, in 1969, with a M.S. in Engineering Management. In 1978, he became a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Tennessee, by examination in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating from Lafayette College, Mr. Jacobus served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Ordnance Corps from 1964-1966 and in 1965 commanded a 185-man Ordnance Company in Vietnam. In subsequent years, he was a Welding Development Engineer with General Electric Flight Propulsion Lynn, MA; the Division Welding Engineer solely responsible for aerospace welding processes and procedures applied to the Apollo Heat Shield at AVCO Space Systems Lowell, MA; Division Metallurgist and Project Engineer, Westinghouse Electric Boston, MA; and Senior Quality Engineer, Fast Flux Test Facility, Westinghouse Advanced Reactors Division Madison, PA. Mr. Jacobus had been a resident of Oak Ridge, TN, for 32 years before retiring in 2007 to Elon, NC. In Oak Ridge, he served in positions of nuclear quality assurance engineering. He was a Senior Quality Engineer, Clinch River Breeder Reactor Project, Westinghouse Advanced Reactors Division. With the Department of Energy primary operating contractors, he was for eight years the Quality Assurance Manager of the Consolidated Fuel Reprocessing Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory Fuel Recycle Division. He supported corporate quality assurance compliance with ANSI/ASME NQA-1; established an overall auditing practice, training, certifying and evaluating performance of auditors program; was a NQA-1 certified auditor and led comprehensive technical evaluation teams; served as Procurement Quality Assurance manager; developed Performance Indicators for Quality; and developed and managed the Suspect/Counterfeit Item Control Program. Mr. Jacobus was a talented trumpet and cornet player. He played for 60 years and especially enjoyed playing with community concert bands. While living in TN, he founded and directed the Discovery Brass ensemble in 1978-1981 and enjoyed performing with brass quintets in local churches. He played in the Oak Ridge Symphony, the Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble, and the East Tennessee Concert Band. He auditioned and performed in the National Community Band in New Orleans, San Antonio, and Illinois. After moving to North Carolina, he continued his music passion and performed with the Greensboro Concert Band, the Greensboro Philharmonia, and the Burlington Company Shops Band. In lieu of flowers, memorials in the name of "Roy Jacobus" may be made to the Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble Attn: Noah Spitzer, Treasurer, P.O. BOX 6980, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6980 or to the Greensboro Concert Band Attn: Jennifer Hance, The Music Center Director, 200 North Davie Street, Greensboro, NC 27401. Family will receive friends on Sunday, March 27, 2011, from 1:00 to 2:30 pm at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory, 2205 South Church Street, Burlington, NC, 27215-5329. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, 320 East Davis Street, Burlington, NC, 27215. Burial following the funeral service will be at the Magnolia Cemetery in Elon, NC with military honors provided by the 82nd Airborne Divison..
