Rose Marie Vickrey

April 24, 1928 — May 30, 2021

Rose Marie Vickrey

On May 30, 2021, Mrs. Rose Marie Hemphill Vickrey, treasured wife and companion of 74 years to Billy K. Vickrey, whom she met on her first day of college in the course registration line, left this earth to join Her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born in Marston, Missouri, 93 years ago to parents Herbert and Lessie Hemphill, both deceased. She was preceded in death by her firstborn son William Gregory, her beloved brothers William (lost in combat in World War II), Jack and Ray and his wife Juanita.

Rose Marie met her Savior and Lord in her early teens and taught Sunday School for more than 65 years, including at Grove Park Baptist Church, enlightening all ages, from babies all the way through to senior women.  More recently, she and Billy were members of Holly Hill Baptist Church.

She graduated from Towson State University (now Towson University) in Maryland, and did additional graduate coursework there, before finding her calling – a career in teaching.  She first taught fourth grade at Westchester Elementary School in Maryland before moving to North Carolina, where she taught emotionally handicapped children at Turrentine Middle School in Burlington.

She leaves on this earth - to remember and cherish her life and mourn her passing - her beloved husband Billy, her daughter-in-law Mackie Lott Vickrey of Collierville, Tennessee (widow of son William Gregory), daughter Debra Marie Vickrey Hoover (Dennis) of Eldersburg, Maryland, and the twins, Wanda Singhass of Westminster, Maryland and John Wayde Vickrey (Gayle) of Wake Forest, NC, as well as her sister-in-law Vernell Hemphill (surviving spouse of brother Jack).

Rose Marie also cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including grandson Greg Vickrey (Jennifer) and great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Delanie, as well as grandchildren Victoria Hoover, Ashley Hoover, and Nick Hoover (Katherine) and great-grandchildren Xavier, Catalina Rose, and Alexander.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at Holly Hill Baptist Church at 11 a.m., followed by the memorial service at 12:30 p.m.  A private family burial service will be conducted at Alamance Memorial Park. All services will be conducted by Dr. Gene Hunsinger.
