Sherron - Burlington, N.C. Dr. Ronald Homer Sherron of Burlington, NC, formerly of Richmond, VA, passed away peacefully Friday, September 19, 2008. Born April 28, 1932, he was the son of the late Macy L. and Eugene H. Sam Sherron originally of Fuquay-Varina, NC. He was also preceded in death by his half-brother, Richard Bailey, of Florence, SC. Dr. Sherron is survived by his adored and loving wife of 37 years, Jo Ann Ellis Sherron, and his children and their spouses: Ronald H. Sherron and Pauline of Raleigh, NC; Sherry S. Kline and Kelly of Farmville, VA; Pamela S. Targett of Richmond, VA; Allison P. Schmidt and Michael of Chesapeake, VA; Andy E. Sherron of Goldsboro, NC; LeAnn S. Boone and Brian of Greenville, NC; ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Gloria S. Earp and her husband Joe of Smithfield, NC; two nieces, Carla Starr and Julie Byrd; two half-sisters, Macy McLendon of Florence, SC and Francis Townes of Santa Monica, CA; and their families. Ron is also survived by his lifelong friend whom he called "brother," Dr. Lacy Gilbert Hall and his wife Barbara of Burlington, NC. A graduate of Fuquay-Varina High School, where he lettered in three sports, he would later attend Campbell University and N.C. State University and receive his Ph.D. from UNC Chapel Hill. He is also a veteran of the US Navy. As a retired Professor Emeritus in Adult and Continuing Education at Virginia Commonwealth University VCU in Richmond, Virginia, he was a major contributor to Adult Education in Virginia and a valued author, researcher, and lecturer. In his role as Executive Director of the Adult Basic Education and Literacy Center of Virginia, he was instrumental in the development of the Virginia Literacy Foundation in conjunction with Mrs. Gerald Baliles. He established the Adult Education Program at VCU and assisted in establishing other state-wide programs including Adult Basic Education and Literacy Learning Centers in both Virginia and North Carolina. In addition, he authored a consortium grant that established academic master's degree programs in six Mid-Atlantic states. He co-authored or edited several books including Introduction to Educational Gerontology, Experimental Studies in Adult Learning and Memory, and numerous educational grants and articles. With all of his written accomplishments, his private passion was writing poetry that sparked the mind to reach and explore new thoughts and ideas. He loved sailing, fishing, and being near blue waters. He had a true and genuine appreciation for music, cooking, and the outdoors, all of which he shared with his beloved Jo Ann and his children. Always a consummate teacher, he was an inspiration; a man of tremendous integrity, creativity, and passion. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. Celebration of Life to be held on October 25th, 2008 at 3:30 pm at Twin Lakes Community Chapel, 100 Wade Coble Drive, Burlington, NC 27215, followed by a reception in the Twin Lakes Terrace.
