Robert J. "RJ" Wagner, Jr., 81, of Burlington went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at VA Hospital in Durham after two years of failing health. He was born in Orange County and was the son of the late Robert J. Wagner, Sr. and Kathleen Barden Wagner. RJ was married for 45 years to Nina Wagner who survives. He was a member of Glen Raven Baptist Church. RJ retired as a Sergeant with the Alamance County Sheriff's Office after 18 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran for over 20 years serving during both the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He was a POW, earned two Bronze Service Stars as well as the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat in Korea, and later retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He is survived by his wife of the home, sons, Steven G. Wagner of Burlington and Jay Wagner of Sweden; daughters, Sharon A. Finch of London, England and Joann Brett Taylor of Graham; six grandchildren, Trey, Spenser, Elizabeth, Jay, Chelsee and Ryan; and a sister, Patsy M. Thorton of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Margaret A. Horner and a brother, Richard R. Wagner. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday at Glen Raven Baptist Church by Rev. Bobby Fann with interment to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Monday evening at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home of his daughter, Joann Taylor. The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to the doctors, nurses and staff with the Hospice Unit and the VA Hospital in Durham.
