Mr. Robert Farrell Smith, Sr., 75, of Truitt Dr., died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 at Duke University Hospital after a brief illness. A native of Shelby, NC, he was the son of the late John Wylie Smith and the late Helen Anthony Smith and was married for over 48 years to Doris Moore Smith, who survives. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Office of Strategic Services during the Korean War. He graduated from Gardner Webb University and Wofford College and later attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received his Masters degree. He retired from AT & T after 32 years service and was a member of St Marks Reformed Church. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Shannon Mackintosh and her husband, Jim, of Burlington, April Briggs and her husband, Jim, of Simpsonville, SC, and Laura Smith of Providence, RI; a son, Robert Farrel Smith, Jr., Rusty and his wife, Melinda, of Burlington; five grandchildren, Robert Mackintosh, Chase Briggs, Ally Briggs, Kayla Smith, and Nicholas Farrell Smith; two step-grandchildren, Gret Mackintosh and Douglas Mackintosh; a brother, Loyd Smith and his wife, Becky, and their family of Shelby, NC; and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Glynden Tom Moore of Burlington. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 25, 2006 at St Marks Church by the Rev. Bob Disher and the Rev. Ben Bishop. The family will receive friends following the service at the church and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Marks Church Nursery Department, 1230 St. Marks Church Rd., Burlington, NC 27215 or the charity of ones choice.
