Robert Self

Robert Lee Self, age 95, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Hospice Home. A native of Rockingham County, he was the son of the late Silas Royal and Minnie Bryant Self and husband of the late Mary Hailey Self who died in 1977 and Inez Thompson Self who died in 1990. Mr. Self was employed by Fieldcrest Mills in Eden before moving to Burlington and then was employed as a Machine Design Engineer with Western Electric. He held several patents both with Fieldcrest and Western Electric. Lee enjoyed gardening and genealogy and was formerly an active member of The Church of the Holy Comforter. Survivors include his son, James L. "Jim" Self of Burlington; daughter, Carol Self Williams and husband, Mack Ray Williams of Reston, VA; grandchildren, Stephen Ray Williams and wife Holly, Mary Elizabeth Peterson, Jennifer Lee Rector and husband Lewis, Julia S. Watkins and husband Tom and Benjamin D. Self; great grandchildren, Mary Thomas Watkins, Jackson Lee Watkins, Nathaniel H. Williams, Christian W. Hoyt, Elizabeth H. Hoyt, Alexis P. Peterson and John Lewis Rector; brother, John W. Self of Eden and sister, Gladys L. Frederick of Arlington, TX; step children, Tony Thompson and wife Brenda, Pat Wall, Pam Lee and husband Ronnie, Barbara Bruner and husband Donnie; 7 step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Frank Self, Eva Neal and Catherine Broadwell; step son, Eddie Thompson. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am Friday, May18, 2012 at Alamance Memorial Park by Rev. Dr. Tom Watkins. Mr. Self will remain at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory until being taken to the cemetery for services. The family will receive friends at Lowe Funeral Home from 9:30 to10:45 am Friday, prior to the service.
