Robert Stephen "Steve" Pettigrew, Jr., 69, passed away after a long lengthy battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at his home. He was born on March 11, 1947 in Rockingham County to the late Robert Stephen "Rusty" Pettigrew, Sr. and Catherine Coleman Pettigrew. Steve was the husband to Carol Tickell Pettigrew who survives; they had 32 wonderful years together.
Steve worked at TST Logistics. He graduated from Reidsville High School and attended UNC in Chapel Hill. Steve served a short time in the Navy; umpired softball and baseball for many years for Alamance County Rec Department, a member of the Burlington Moose Lodge, was a long time member of the Burlington Shag Club, where he enjoyed spending time with all our friends that we met through the years shagging. He loved listening to beach/shag music and especially loved to shag. Steve wanted all of his friends in the shag club to know that he cherished their friendship. He was an avid golfer and played as much as possible with his many friends as golf was his passion. Steve never met a stranger and was loved by many. He attended Harvest Baptist Church and loved this church. We would like to thank this wonderful church for being with us throughout this long lengthy journey and all the wonderful people there who stood by our side.
Survivors other than his wife, Carol of the home include his sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Beth Hodge of Cary, Gray and Aimee Pettigrew of Mebane, Reid Pettigrew and Wesley Carden both of Burlington; daughters, Chris Carden of Snow Camp and Debbie Seward of Wallburg; 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Sarah Pettigrew of Haw River. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Bradley Joyner.
The funeral will be held 2:00pm Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Harvest Baptist Church by Rev. Walter Webster and Rev. Larry Lamberth with the burial to follow in Greenview Cemetery in Reidsville. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm Monday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home.
