CLAYTON - Robert Jackson Martin, 86, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Springbrook Nursing and Rehab in Clayton, NC.

He was born in Alamance County on June 28, 1931 to the late Lester Jackson and Lyda Spoon Martin and was the husband of the late Nancy Palmer Martin for 18 years and for 17 years to Ila Starr Martin of Winston-Salem, NC.

Robert was a member of First Baptist Church in Burlington where he committed his life to Christ as a young boy. He graduated from Burlington High School, received undergraduate degrees from Campbell University and Carson Newman University, a graduate degree from New Orleans Baptist Seminary and later a Doctorate degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Robert dedicated his life to serving God as a husband, father, teacher and pastor. His passion was to share the Gospel of Christ and see lives changed which led him to serve as a missionary with Wycliff Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea and with the International Mission Board in Liberia and Ghana, West Africa.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Samuel Martin and wife Nichole; daughter, Mary Lyda Eaton and husband Jim; grandchildren, Evelynn, Jameson and Maximus Eaton and Decker, Avery, Samantha and Ronen Martin; two half sisters, Ann Lawrence (husband Tommy), Elizabeth Carmichael, (husband, Roger); and two half brothers Jim Martin (wife, Jean) and Charles (wife, Susanne). He was preceded in death by his first wife, parents and an infant brother.

A service to celebrate his life will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. John Cavari with the burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home. Following the graveside service a reception will be held at It's All Good Southern Kitchen, 2306 S. Church Street.
