Robert Guthrie, Sr.

Robert J. Guthrie, Sr., 81, of Stoney Creek, North Carolina went to be with his Lord on July 26, 2016. He grew up in New Jersey and was a proud alumnus of Notre Dame University and New York University. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Sara (Brennan) Guthrie, also by brothers, Thomas Guthrie and Joseph Guthrie and sisters, Nancy Guthrie and Joan Riordan.
He is survived by his loving wife, Monica of 59 years. They had seven children; son, Robert Guthrie, Jr. (Beverly) of Missouri; son, Brian Guthrie (Elizabeth) of Minnesota; daughter, Andrea Vickory (Lance) of Montana; daughter, Maura Guthrie of Texas; daughter, Catherine (Vallis) of Texas and daughter, Lesley Vanderbeck (Donald) of New Jersey. He is preceded in death by his son, Sean Guthrie. He leaves twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Their home was always filled with activity, laughter and love. Sometimes you could even see Bob in a kilt marching in the Emerald Pipe Band of Newark, New Jersey.
Robert, "Bob" , enjoyed a successful career at AT&T and retired from Lucent in 1985 after 35 years of service. He held many positions at AT&T involving the management of all aspects of manufacturing operations, production control, materials management, customer service and storeroom operations at two major manufacturing facilities.
Bob is a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was active in his church and community. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Alamance County Chamber of Commerce representing AT&T and served on the Finance Committee. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Child Care Resource and Referral of Alamance. He was the chairman of the Development Committee for the Blessed Sacrament School Board. As chairman he helped develop the first Annual Fund Program to support the needs for this nationally recognized school.
He was a member of the Alamance County Job Opportunities and Family Support Task Force. In this capacity he was instrumental in helping win a statewide competition resulting in the awarding of a grant for $1Million. Among his other community service activities were the Alamance County Substance Abuse and Residential Services Committee; the Alamance County Solid Waste Committee; and the Alamance Community College Industrial Management Advisory Committee.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, July 29, 2016 at 1:00 pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hanford Rd., Burlington, NC with Rev. Briant Cullinane, O.F.M., Conv. Presiding. The visitation will be at the church from 12:00-1:45 pm prior to the Mass.
The burial will be private.
