Mr. Robert Emmett Ayers, Sr. age 96, of Burlington, NC passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024.
Born in Battle Creek, MI to the late Harold Fulton and Mary Pronte Ayers, March 17, 1928. Married for 48 years to Lola Pulley Ayers.
Educated in the Battle Creek, Michigan school system. Bob continued his education into college attending Hampton Institute (known as Hampton University) he received his Bachelor’s/undergraduate degree. He then pursued his masters receiving his degree from University of Pennsylvania and Case Western Reserve in Physical Therapy.
Robert retired after 21 years as Department Chair of Physical Therapy at Hunter College, New York and relocated to North Carolina becoming a member of Watts Street Baptist Church which led to 17 memorable years working with Habitat for Humanity.
Bob enjoyed all sports, including being an All American in Football form Hampton University. Robert was active in many sports, in more recent years he was an avid bowler and played corn hole.
Robert is survived by his wife, Lola B. Ayers ; son, Robert Emmett Ayers, Jr. and grandson, David Robert Ayers; his brother, Frank (Jill) Ayers of Lansing Michigan with numerous nieces and nephews around the US. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Ayers and 2 sisters, Ellen McKinney and Elva Burden.
A service to celebrate Robert’s life will be held at 2:00 in the afternoon on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at the Elon Community Church by Rev. Randy Orwig and assisted by Rev. Sharon Wheeler.
