Richard L. Smith, age 74, of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 at the Hospice Home surrounded by his family after several weeks of failing health. He was a native of Alamance County and was the son of the late Clyde Wilber Smith and the late Frances Irene Kimrey Smith and when Richard was 11 years old he went to live with his relatives, Bill and Peggy Kimrey. He was married for 49 years to Patricia Ann Andrews Smith, who survives. Richard retired from Yellow Freight after a number of years, was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was a US Army veteran, serving in the Vietnam War. Richard was a member of the Alamance Region AACA car club and he received 1st place for fourteen years in a row at the Annual Hospice Car Show. He loved old cars and antiques and was devoted to his family. Richard strived to be like his father-in-law who he was very close to. After retirement, Richard, his wife, and their little dog "Mit Mit" enjoyed traveling for several years. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of the home; two sons, Rodney Van Smith and wife, Malania, and Richard Bret Smith and wife, Leslie; three grandchildren, Davis, Jason and Claire Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Russell, Harvey and Marshall Smith; and a sister, Martha Smith. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 2719 Bellemont-Alamance Rd., by Rev. Nathan Hooks. Entombment will follow in the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 11:45 until 12:45 pm Wednesday prior to the service in the church parlor and other times at the home.
