Mr. Richard Eugene Haithcock, 88, passed away peacefully at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness on Thursday, May 23, 2024.
Richard was born July 12, 1935 in Alamance County to Eugene and Lillie Haithcock. He worked in the auto industry for most of his career, from selling cars to auto parts, and was the owner of Richard’s 66 Gas and Auto Repair. He also worked for a time as a manager at Burlington Industries. Richard had a heart for volunteering, and was involved for many years with Alamance County Relay for Life as well as Alamance County Meals on Wheels. A member of the Western Alamance Athletic Boosters, he served a term as President. He was a fan of NASCAR and loved to travel, especially taking day trips to the beach. Richard was always present for his family, showing up to his children’s and grandchildren’s ballgames and recitals. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Basil Haithcock and Banks Haithcock; half-sister, Addie Boyle; half-brother, Harvey Riley; and beloved dog, Zac.
Richard is survived by his devoted partner of 37 years, Judy Bowes; children, Deborah Loy and husband Joe, Sandra Payne and husband Linwood, and Richard “Ricky” Haithcock, Jr. and wife Angela; grandchildren, Crystal Thompson (J.W.), Joe Loy, Jr. (Kim), Courtney Newton (Brandon), Brent Payne (Whitney), Josh Haithcock, and Hailey Haithcock; great-grandchildren, Gavin Loy, Raigan Loy, Stella Newton, Callen Newton, and Everly Payne; long-time friend, Janie Bennett; several nieces and nephews; Judy’s children, Kim Boggs and Heather Lewis; Judy’s grandchildren (who affectionately called Richard “Papa Shug”), Kieli Forbes, Kelsi Hurst, Katie Somers, Brittany Lewis, Morgan Brown, and Jacob Lewis; and his special dog, Abby.
A celebration of Richard’s life will be held Friday, May 31, 2024 at 2 PM at Carolina Christian Church with Rev. Mark Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 30, 2024 from 5 – 7 PM at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory.
