Reverend Jerry W. Moore, age 73, of Winston-Salem entered his eternal rest on August 22, 2017, at Piedmont Crossing Healthcare Center in Thomasville, N.C.
He was born on April 23, 1944, in Alamance County. Reverend Moore attended Altamahaw Ossipee High School, was involved in student government, lettered in basketball and football, and graduated with the class of 1962. After he received his calling into the Christian ministry, he went on to further his education at Elon College where he played basketball and majored in religion. While at Elon, he began working with the youth at Elon Community Church. Two special mentors in his religious education at Elon were Dr. Earl Danieley and Dr. Ferris Reynolds. His greatest mentor in life was his maternal grandfather, Carl Sutton, Sr., who he lovingly called "Gramps." Reverend Moore also met and married his wife of 52 years during his tenure at Elon.
Continuing his religious studies, he entered Duke Divinity School in 1970 and studied under the tutelage of Dr. William Willimon. Reverend Moore was ordained into the Christian ministry on June 12, 1970. . During his 37 years of active ministry, he served 6 parishes in the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ in North Carolina and in the Central Atlantic Conference of the United Church of Christ in Virginia: Lakeview United Church of Christ, Burlington, N.C.; Henderson Christian Church, Henderson, N.C.; Saint John's United Church of Christ, Burlington, N.C.; St. John's United Church of Christ, Richmond, VA.; Second United Church of Christ, Lexington, N.C.; as well as several interim positions, including Mount Zion in China Grove, N.C., after his retirement in 2007. During his ministerial career, Reverend Moore was very active in the areas of social justice, mental health, and community service and served on many church and community committees, boards, and projects. For many years, Reverend Moore directed a summer program for youth at the UCC sponsored Johns River Valley Camp. He also shepherded 7 individuals into pastoral ministry. Reverend Moore was currently a member of Parkway United Church of Christ in Winston-Salem.
Reverend Moore is survived by his wife, Gayle G. Moore, of the home; son, Guye Lee Moore, of McDonough, GA., daughter Nicole M. Davis and her husband, Kevin of Greenville, N.C., and grandson, Lucas. He is also survived by his sisters, Shirley M. Mize and Ruth Ellen Rainey and their families, all of Alamance County. Reverend Moore is also survived by many other family members whom he loved very much.
Reverend Moore was predeceased by his parents, Josh J. Moore and Alma Sutton Moore Gilliam; his brothers, Larry and Ronald; and his step-father, Lofton Gilliam.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of Piedmont Crossing Healthcare Center and Hospice of Davidson County for their professionalism, guidance, and care. A service to celebrate his life and ministry will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2017, 3:00 p.m. at Elon Community Church by Rev. Michael Hooper, Rev. Craig Schaub and Rev. Randy Orwig. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Family Life Center. A private family interment will be held at a later date. Lowe's Funeral Home of Burlington, N.C. is handling the arrangements.
