Burlington, NC Rev. Ben Davis Farmer, Jr., age 75, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at VA Medical Center in Durham. He was a native of Alamance County and the husband of Sue Doggett Farmer who survives. Rev. Farmer and his wife, Sue ministered for many years to the residents at the former Hillhaven of Alamance in Graham. He was a longtime member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church where he served as an adult Sunday school teacher for many years. Ben served his country during the Vietnam War with the US Navy. He resided over the past 4 years at the CLC at VA Hospital in Durham. He was a loving and devoted Christian who supported his family and his church. Ben received various degrees from Alamance Community College, Wake Forest University, Tennessee Temple University and Mars Hill College. Survivors include his wife, Sue D. Farmer of Elon; step daughter, Angela Cordero Oertel and her husband, Geoffrey Kenneth Oertel of Elon; grandchildren, Heather O'Shields Valdez and her husband, Jason of Graham, Stephen Kyle O'Shields of Mebane; sister, Lois Ann Farmer of Burlington and a brother, Robert M. Farmer and his wife, Ilene of South Dakota; sister-in-law, Sarah Doggett Folckomer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Davis Farmer, Sr. and Eulila Creasy Farmer and his sister, Jeanie Mae Farmer. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Andrews Memorial Baptist Church Chapel by Dr. Tommy Willis. The entombment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park with military honors by the US Navy. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home of Angela C. Oretel in Elon.
