Burlington- Rev. J. Howard Cates, 93, passed away peacefully into God's hands April 1, 2012. All who knew him loved him and his life reflected the Bible's teaching. He is survived by three sons, Jerry Pat in Hickory NC, David Carol in Burlington NC and Stephen Janet in Disputanta, VA, 7 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was married to Hilda Mae Laughon for 42 years then Betty Jo Gibson for 25 years both of whom preceded him in death. A graduate of Elon University and Southern Baptist Seminary, Rev Cates was ordained to the ministry in April 1945 by the First Baptist Church, Burlington, NC and served the Lord faithfully for the rest of his life and in churches in North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia. Upon his retirement in 1983 he was named Pastor Emeritus of Fredericksburg Baptist Church where he had served for 28 years. After retirement he continued as an Interim Pastor in many Fredericksburg area churches. He was blessed with a beautiful baritone voice that he used for the glory of God. He integrated music into many of his sermons and did song services at retirement and nursing homes. He also participated in mission trips to many countries including Bermuda, England, Australia, Indonesia and Ukraine His community service included Staff Member of the Fredericksburg Counseling Service, member of the Kiwanis Club and Chairman of the religious celebration of the Bi-Centennial in Fredericksburg. A memorial service to rejoice in his life will be held 11:00am Monday, April 9, 2012 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Terry Peele with graveside rites to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00am until 10:45am prior to the service. A memorial service will also be held at Fredericksburg Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 10 at 11:00am. Contributions in Rev Cates's memory may be made to the Cates-Kelly Home, c/o Fredericksburg Baptist Church.
