Raymond Lee Smith

      Raymond Lee Smith, 85, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. 

     A native of Alamance County, he was the son of the late Ralph Frank Smith and Annie Royal Martin Smith and was married for over 40 years to Rachel Loftis Smith, who survives.  Raymond was an Electrician for General Electric for many years before retirement, as well as a police officer for Elon College and Burlington Police.  He was a devoted member of Staley Memorial Baptist Church in Burlington.  He loved his animals, watching Tar Heel Basketball, and working on anything he could fix.  He was known for his servant’s heart, willingness to help anyone, and being an amazing caregiver to his beloved wife, Rachel. 

     Survivors other than his wife, Rachel, include; children; Kim Kleu and husband Jon, Lee Smith and wife Eve, Lisa Cagle and husband Mark, Darlene Evans and husband Ray, and Cindy Nance and husband Steve, grandchildren; Kasey Bowers and husband Will, Nick Kleu, Kristi Kleu, Alexandria Brenner and husband Brad, Adam Cagle, Maegan Whitehurst and husband Jason, Mallory Evans, Marshall Evans and wife Ashton, and Carlie McKinney and husband Matt, great - grandchildren; Mia Whitehurst, Benjamin Whitehurst, Sophia Cagle, Adalyn Evans, Collins Evans, and Boston McKinney, sister; Shirley Patterson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers; Pete Smith, Neal Smith, and Allen Smith.  

     A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 28, 2023, in the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Jason Whitehurst with the interment to follow at Alamance Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 – 12:00 PM prior to the service at the funeral home.

     The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of Raymond and Rachel’s neighbors, who continuously checked on them throughout the last few weeks, especially to their friend Louann Williams for all of her kindness.
