Rachel Smith Yow,94, passed away peacefully after visits with her children on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Compass Healthcare at Hawfields. She was born September 13, 1925 in Burlington to Irma Doyle Phillips Smith and George Claudius Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband W. Cauzell Yow and sisters Margaret Hogan and Betty Smith.
A 1942 graduate of Burlington High School, she enjoyed celebrating with her classmates for many years. She was born into the fellowship of Davis Street UMC and worshipped there as long as she was able. She served tirelessly on too many committees and positions that we can name. She loved every minute of it and all her young and old friendships there.
During WW II she worked at the National Bank of Burlington until becoming a mom. After that she took on everything from school carpooler to cub scout leader including anything else her children or their neighborhood friends needed. She took care of our family by being the best wife, mother, bottle washer and cook.
Her friends were numbered in all age groups, whether old friends or new people she met. She embarked on a new chapter when she began working at Belk-Beck Department Store. She was always a talented seamstress like her sisters but her love of fashion found its place. Besides her customers, she valued her co-workers as friends. We hope you remember her affection for you. Rachel and Cauzell were volunteers for Hospice and at ARMC, giving back to Burlington was very important to them as well as their lifelong friends.
Rachel is survived by her children, Sally Yow Maples, David and Lisa Yow; grandchildren, Logan Maples, Arden & Adam Thomas, Taylor Yow and a great grandson Holden Thomas. Her love of family extended to all her nieces and nephews who gave her love in return. Thank you for your calls and visits over the years. There was a special place in her heart for each of you.
We will be having a graveside service 11:00 AM Friday at Alamance Memorial Park. Please take this time to remember a special time of yours with Rachel. We know you have one. We look forward to celebrating her life with you when conditions allow.
Memorials may be made to any organization special to you.
A special thanks to all the wonderful healthcare professionals who made her days enjoyable. What a great job you do.
Mama, we are so blessed to have known you.
