Philip Johnson Hundley, Sr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at the Hospice Home in Burlington. He was born in Spray, NC on November 11, 1934 to the late Fred Ray Hundley and Ethyl Vestal Hundley.
Philip was an artillery surveyor in the US Army from 1957 – 1959 while stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. Upon returning home, he joined his family’s business of paint and wallpaper services. Later, switching to wallpaper exclusively, he papered homes and businesses throughout Rockingham and Guilford Counties for over 35 years. His reputation for his trade was well known throughout the area as the man you wanted if you were needing your wall papered.
He was a natural athlete and lover of all sports, especially basketball, which he played throughout high school and beyond. His teammates nicknamed him “Spider” for his ability to jump. In later years, golf was his passion and he was found on the course every chance he got. He especially loved Wolf Creek Golf Club where his golfing buddies made and erected a sign stating “Philip Hundley made 2 holes in one on hole #11.”
He was a member of Merriman Street Wesleyan Church until it’s closure in 2012. He loved the Lord and was active in his church working on building projects, teaching Sunday School and serving on the administrative board. He attended Dan River Wesleyan Church and later Gibsonville United Methodist Church.
In 2018, Philip and Carolyn moved to the Hamlet Independent Living Community at Blakey Hall. It was there they made many dear friends who they enjoyed spending time with through various gatherings and activities. His friends loved to see him ride his bicycle throughout the community.
Philip is survived by the love of his life, Carolyn Stevens Hundley, to whom he was married for 63 years. Always together, their enduring love and devotion to one another is a lasting gift to their children and grandchildren. Also, left to cherish his memory are his children, Maria Hundley Harrison (David) and Philip Hundley, Jr. (Angela); two grandchildren, Zachary Harrison and Matthew Harrison (Elizabeth); great grandson, Oliver Harrison; sister, Mary Ann Elkins (Ron) and brother-in-law, James Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James, Bobby, Gordon and Ronnie Hundley.
A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Bob Disher and Pastor Joanne Soliday with the burial to follow at Ridgeview Memorial Gardens in Eden. The family will receive friends from 11:30 – 12:45 prior to the service at Lowe Funeral Home and other times at the home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AuthoraCare (Hospice) of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.
