Peter Bruce Andrews, 87, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025 at his residence. He was born November 1, 1937 in New York City and raised in Tenafly, NJ to the late Frank Emerson and Edith Severance Andrews and was the husband of nearly 40 years to Catherine Clair “Cate” Andrews of the home.
Formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, Peter was a Professor of Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh for 49 years. With the help of many graduate students, he published numerous papers and had grants from the National Science Foundation. He also received the Thoralf Skolem and Herbrand Awards for research in multiple mathematical disciplines. In 2024 he received a patent on a bandage for critical wounds and was working on a book on miracles in the Bible.
Peter loved games such as croquet, bridge and numerous board games. He enjoyed operas, contra, square dancing and sailing his catamaran on Lake Champlain.
He is survived by his wife, Cate Andrews; sons, Lyle Andrews and Bruce (Tobi) Andrews in Vermont; former wife, Linda Fitch; a niece, nephews, three great nieces and one great nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Frank (Ann) and Bryant (Betsy) Andrews.
