Pastor Gary William Hendrix, 73, went to be home with Jesus on Thursday, October 29, surrounded by
his family. He was born on May 16, 1947, in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Thomas Floyd Hendrix and
Hazel Watson Hendrix. Gary was a 1970 graduate of Piedmont Bible College. It was also in 1970 that
Gary married his high school sweetheart Sherry Martin Hendrix. They would have celebrated their 50th,
anniversary on November 27th, of this year. In this same year, Pastor Gary began his ministry at Free
Grace Baptist Tabernacle (later to become Grace Reformed Baptist Church), in Mebane, NC. It was here
at Grace Reformed Baptist Church that Gary would plant the roots of his ministry, and where he would
faithfully serve for the next 50 years. Over the course of those 50 years Pastor Gary preached the gospel
of Jesus Christ thousands of times to congregations all over the world. Pastor Gary was a dynamic
preacher who sought to faithfully proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ, with deep reverence for the
authority of the Bible. Only in heaven will we fully appreciate the scope and magnitude of how God
used his servant to bring others to saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Gary (“Pop”) was adored by his 9 grandchildren and loved every opportunity to be surrounded by family.
He loved enjoying God’s creation, especially on trips with his bride to the Blue Ridge Mountains of North
Carolina. He also took advantage of every opportunity to travel back to Winston-Salem to pull for his
beloved Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
He is survived by his wife Sherry Martin Hendrix, daughter Laura Johnston (Jeff Johnston) of Mebane,
NC, and two sons, Grant (Erin Hendrix) of Louisville, KY and Zane (Jennie Rhyne Hendrix) Hendrix of
Winston-Salem, NC; 9 grandchildren, Avonlea Johnston, Jack Johnston, McKenna Johnston, Sam
Johnston, Kinley Hendrix, Kaden Hendrix, Sarah Cate Hendrix, Watt Hendrix, and Ty Hendrix.
The family will receive friends from 3-6 pm Saturday October 31, 2020 at Grace Reformed Baptist Church. Graveside services will be private. A Memorial service will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, November 1, 2020 at Grace Reformed Baptist Church in Mebane.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bradford Academy, 939 South Third St, Mebane, NC
27302.
