Pastor Garland Lester Simmons, Sr., 74, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 6, 2017 surrounded by his family at VA Medical Center in Durham. He was born in Mecklenburg County, VA to the late Clarence and Elizabeth Simmons and was married to Betty Ann Moore Simmons, who survives. He was the owner and operator of Simmons Upholstery and was pastor at Maranatha Baptist Church for over 39 years. Pastor Simmons was the chaplain at Faucette Township Volunteer Fire Department, served on the board of directors as well and was a member of the Federal Fire Chaplains Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Moore Simmons, children, Randy (Becky) Simmons, Beverly (Howard) Bray, Butch (Delana) Simmons, Donna (Ricky) Crutchfield, Anita Thursa (Chris) Kidd, Tommy (Mandy) Simmons; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a brother, Ed (Judy) Simmons. He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.
The funeral will be held 2:00 PM Friday at Carolina Christian Church by Pastor Larry Janey with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Thursday evening at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home.
