Gibsonville, NC Oliver Perry Shelton, age 79, of 605 Church Street went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at his home. He was a native of Guilford County and the husband of 51 years to Carolyn McDaniel Shelton who survives. Oliver retired after 40 years with Lucent Technologies and was a member of Gibsonville United Methodist Church. He was a US Army veteran serving during the occupation at the end of WW II in Japan and later re-enlisting and serving during the Korean War. He was responsible for taking care of death registration in reburying and transporting bodies of service men killed in action and meeting with their families in the states. Oliver was an avid Carolina Fan and he loved all sports. He spent many years with Hilton Yow preparing ball fields at Elon College and the University of North Carolina. He was a local umpire in our community for many years and was responsible for helping to organize the officiating for local sporting events. Oliver was a member of the local Burlington Eagles Bowling team who won the North Carolina State Duckpin Tournament in 1955, he also won the state handicap singles championship in that same year. Oliver was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who enjoyed spending leisure time at home with his family. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn McDaniel Shelton of the home; daughters, Susan Mike Gerringer of Elon, Cathy Jimmy D. Lloyd Shelton of Reidsville; grandchildren, Michael Wendy Gerringer of Winston-Salem, Christy Jimmy Stallings Gerringer of Elon, Nicholas Amanda Allen Hardy of Gibsonville; great grandchildren, Tyler Journigan of Elon and Autumn Gerringer of Winston-Salem; special mother-in-law, Reba R. Cook of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Fleet Shelton, Sr. and Maude Truitt Shelton; granddaughter, Kelly Marie Gerringer; infant sister, Helen Shelton; brother, J. F. Shelton, Jr. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. David Greene and burial will follow at Alamance Memorial Park with Military Honors provided by the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army.
