Elon, NC Norman Gray "Hambone" Hamlett, 79, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at Alamance Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. A native of Alamance County, he was born to the late Charles Edward Hamlett and Dorothy Hylton Shockley and was the husband of 58 years to Thressa Gerringer Hamlett of the home. Norman was a longtime member of Bethlehem Christian Church and retired from Western Electric after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Ala-Cas Hunting Club and the Senior Advantage Walkers. Norman was a US Marine veteran serving in the Korean War. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren the love of hunting and fishing. He got joy from watching his hummingbirds and martins return each year. Survivors include his wife of the home; daughters, Joyce Hamlett Poole and husband, Hampton "Buck" of Raleigh and Jean Hamlett Maness and husband, Mark Fred of Burlington; grandchildren, Hampton R. "Tripp" Poole and wife, Buffy G., Sarah Gray Poole, Matthew Lee Maness and Michael William Maness; great grandchildren, Hunter Ryan Poole and Sydney-Paige Poole; brother, Richard Lee Shockley and wife, Annie of Roanoke, VA and sisters, Beth Shockley and husband, Eddie Canada of Burlington and Diane Pritchett and husband, Aubrey of Danville, VA. He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sue Shockley Finn and infant daughter, Billie Ann. The funeral service will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, February 16, 2013 at Bethlehem Christian Church by Rev. Dave Gilbert with the burial to follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8pm at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Christian Church Fellowship Hall Addition Fund, PO Box 127, Altamahaw, NC 27202.
