“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalms 42:5

“So you, too, must keep watch! For you don’t know what day your Lord is coming,” Matthew 24:42.

It is bitter sweet to have to share that Nicholas Dewey “Nick” Johnson, 28, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, July 18, 2024. He was born on September 27, 1995 in Guilford County to William Hurley “Billy” Johnson and Angela Dawn Coble Johnson of the home.

Nicholas was a quiet and humble person. He never complained and was always willing to serve and help others. He enjoyed graphic design, video editing and was everybody’s fixer for their technical issues. He loved woodworking and engraving wood; he was a collector of guns and knives; and really enjoyed shooting targets with his dad and friends. Billy and Angela, along with their Holly’s Chapel Church family, dedicated him to the Lord on October 1, 1995 under guidance of Pastor Tim Wolfe. They attended there for several months after Nicholas’ birth and then Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Staley, NC as they sought a home church for Nicholas to thrive as a child. The Lord eventually led Billy and Angela to Trinity Worship Center because of their wonderful children’s ministry now led by one of Nick’s mentors, Nichole Wyrick and Karen Al-Chacar. He accepted the Lord as his Savior around the age of 8 while he and his mom prayed their bedtime prayers. He became a member of Trinity Worship Center as soon as he was old enough to join and Pastor Darrell Cox and Roger Barefoot baptized him on March 14, 2004. That year was a turning point for Nicholas’ relationship with Christ and Pastor Roger Barefoot was a big part of his growth in the Lord. He grew up in Trinity where he enjoyed playing the drums while in Youth Quake (now Trinity Students led by Christian Barrington) and later serving on staff for reGen and Shift 56 with previous leader Phil Harden and later Jordan and Kara Smith. Nick recently joined the new young adults ministry with his long-time friend Lexi Saber. Trinity was his second home where he made many, many friends, led others to attend, and met his church mom, Lydia Moser. If he was ever out late, he was at Trinity.

Nicholas loved music. His favorite instrument was the drum, where Jeremy Thomas spent many hours teaching him. Nick taught himself how to play the bass guitar and liked to play around with the electric and acoustic guitar. He took piano lessons for many years with Phyllis Countryman. That wasn’t his favorite instrument but he learned to play “Last Date” by Floyd Cramer for his adored Mamaw Johnson. He loved his grandparents and they played a big part in his personality. His Mawmaw Coble babysat him along with his cousins Bryan and Bradley. What fond memories they have of each other. His Pawpaw Coble loved to work with wood and Nick picked up that trait. Many he was close to received a handmade treasure from him. He spoke intelligently and delicately about his Lord as he shared the gospel with others.

Nicholas started out at Liberty Preschool with Lisa Griffith and then some years at Alamance Christian School, Burlington Christian Academy and graduated in 2014 from Blessed Assurance Christian Academy, taught by Veritas and his mom and dad. Nicholas originally planned to study Nursing with focus on Informatics but after working with Cone Health ARMC HomeCare Providers for a couple years and finishing his first semester in Nursing, he decided it wasn’t the route he wanted to take. Nick recently received his Associates degree and certification in Cyber Security from Alamance Community College. He was currently employed with Trinity Worship Center as lead A/V Tech and Producer Coordinator under mentor Matt Laparra and Keith Brown. He was so proud of those titles and he would have worked without pay if they would have let him. He followed closely in Josh Dean and Taylor Moser’s footsteps. He did part-time work with FedEx as a package handler.

Survivors other than his parents, that he loved dearly, Billy and Angela Johnson include his beloved sister, Jessica Johnson and significant other, Matt May; nephews, Jacob, Jaxson, and Jasper May; a niece, Joszlyn May; maternal grandparents, Arthur and Nancy Coble; paternal grandmother, Nancy Johnson; a special friend, Lexi Saber; his aunts, uncles and many cousins; and his loving church family. Nick was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, William “Bill” Johnson, his canine companion, Shadow, instructor Phyllis Countryman, and friend Josh Dean.

The funeral service to celebrate the life of Nick will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, August 4th, 2024 at Trinity Worship Center by Rev. Darrell Cox and Rev. Roger Barefoot with the burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant UMC Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 PM on Saturday, August 3rd, 2024 at Trinity Worship Center and other times at the residence.

Billy and Angela would like to thank everyone that has wrapped their arms around them in prayer for their family. They would also like to thank the Alamance County Sheriff's Department for everything they do.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Worship Center, 3157 S. Church Street, Burlington, NC 27215.
