Nellie Copley Chambers, 94, of Burlington, NC, died peacefully, with her two youngest sons by her side at Moses Cone Hospital on Monday, February 22, 2021. She is preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Mary Copley.
Nell leaves behind her beloved husband of 76 years, John Chambers and four children, Hal Chambers of Cullman, Alabama; Deb Stewart of Burlington, NC; Stan Chambers (Pam) of Kernersville, NC; and Rod Chambers of Cary, NC; four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Nell was raised in Copley’s Corner and met her husband in ninth grade at Mangum High School. After marrying in 1945, together they built a life and a family. Her happiest moments were spent taking care of her family. Family gatherings always brought her the greatest joy. She loved sitting around the dining room table reminiscing with her children about their childhood- and maybe playing a game or two of Rook.
Nell was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Burlington where she delighted in assisting with the children’s ministry. She was an exceptional cook and was best known for her chocolate pie. She always greeted everyone with a warm smile—and a warm meal if you had the time. She loved her Boston Terrier, Abby. Nell was an excellent seamstress and spent many of her younger years quilting and making clothes for her children. She loved crafts, floral arrangements, and her garden. She had the best laugh and found humor in everyday life. Those who were lucky enough to know Nell loved her and treasured her friendship.
A private graveside service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the Alamance Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by Dr. Dale O. Steele. There will be a public viewing on Friday from 1-5pm at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
