Burlington-Myrtle Newton Sykes, 96 went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Twin Lakes Coble Creek Health Care. She was the daughter of the late Walter Alexious Newton, Sr. and Ethel Mae Hyatt Newton.
Myrtle was employed by Tower Hosiery Mill for 49 years and she received her G.E.D. when she was 80 years old. She was a former girl scout and member of Burlington First Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday School for 25 years. She was also a member of the choir and secretary of her Sunday School Class for many years. Myrtle enjoyed playing solitaire, doing word search puzzles and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her granddaughter, Madison Newton Childress and son-in-law, Claude (Bo) Childress. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Denise Sykes Childress, 4 brothers, William James Leroy Newton, Walter Taft Newton, Charles Clyde Newton, Sr. and Walter Alexious Newton, Jr. and a sister, Mary Lou Newton King.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 am at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Darrel Kroeze. A private burial at Alamance Memorial Park will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
