Myrtle Lou Williams Boger, beloved mother, grandmother, wife, daughter and friend, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024 at the AuthoraCare Hospice House in Burlington, NC at the age of 91. She lived a long and fulfilling life dedicated to her family. She was a member of Burlington Christian Church. Myrtle was born on September 21, 1932, in Mount Airy, NC. She was the fifth of eight living children born to the late Mattie Alice Leftwich Williams and Willie Austin Williams, both of whom, according to her, hung the moon. She was the last surviving sibling of the entire family.
Myrtle married the late William Burch (Bill) Barham in May 1950 in York, South Carolina. They had two children, Kathy Dawn and William Burch Barham, II (Billy). Myrtle and Bill parted ways in 1970 and in 1971, she married Nelson Monroe Boger (we called him Boge or Bogie) and became the stepmother of Nancy Boger Thompson and Lewis McGarvia Boger (Mac) and a step grandmother to Jamie, Jonny, Jeffrey and Beth Thompson and Alicia Boger Beavers and Briane Boger.
Our mom, to us, was invincible. She was always protecting us and loving us more than anything or anyone else in the world. While we were growing up, she was a homemaker. She made my clothes and my Barbie doll dresses for my cousin, Sandy, and me. She was our champion. She attended all of Billy’s and Billy 3’s ballgames and was the biggest cheerleader. Her home was always spotless, and she had dinner ready for our daddy at 5:30pm every evening. She continued having dinner ready for our stepfather, even if he worked a different schedule. Mom was an excellent cook and enjoyed hosting family meals, especially at Christmas, when she would go all out! We would have a house full of family and tables full of food and desserts. She never failed to bake a Red Velvet Cake (among others) because it was and still is a family favorite. Billy and I always loved her “Mount Airy” meals, which she learned how to cook from her mother. She always cooked our favorite meal for our birthdays. Billy’s was a shell pasta dish and mine was shepherd’s pie.
Mom took pride in her job after we became older. She was the jewelry department manager of the old Kmart on Randleman Road in Greensboro. However, her primary job in her life was to be the best mother ever…and she was and will always be. She retired early so that she could help care for her only grandchild, Billy 3, whom she adored. She also had a passion for gardening and she, along with Bogie, raised and sold azaleas. Her yard was full every spring with the blooms of her beloved flowers.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings (Beulah, Clayton, Bertie, Johnny, Bobby, Billy and Shirley), husband, Nelson Monroe Boger, and stepdaughter, Nancy Boger Thompson. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Barham McConnell (Dan), son, William Burch Barham, II (Bonnie) and the apple of her eye, her grandson, William Burch Barham, III (aka Billy 3). She is also survived by her stepson, Mac Boger and step grandchildren, Alicia Boger Beavers and Briane Boger.
Billy and I would like to thank the AuthoraCare home health hospice staff for their amazing care for the past ten months and the Hospice House staff for our mom’s remaining time here. Special heartfelt thanks go to the home hospice healthcare staff: Mitzi, RN; Anna, CNA; Karen, MSW and Gail, Chaplain. Our mom loved you all, and so did we.
