Mrs. Frances Jean Finger-Bassett went to her eternal home Thursday, June 14, 2007. To her many friends she was known as Fran and her family as Fing. She was born in Penn Yan, NY on February 28, 1922 to her parents Clyde Miller Finger Sr. and Yorke Race Finger. Her siblings are Phyllis Myers and Carole Ira Spector both of Coronado, CA, brothers Clyde Finger Jr. Maybelle of Southbury, CT and Donald Finger of Queen Creek, AZ. She moved to Bethel, CT with her parents as a baby. She graduated from Bethel High School in 1939 and Connecticut State Teachers College in December, 1943 with a BA degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation she married H. Edwin Bassett who was in the U.S. Airforce, stationed at Hickman Field Hawaii. Following his discharge they moved back to Bethel where she was busy raising three daughters Cheryl, Patti and Lisa. During those years she was active in various organizations and the local Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher and Board Plus member. Her husbands company moved the family to Bradenton, FL in 1957. In 1963 the family was transferred to California so her husband could work on the NASA Space Program. Not too many years later they were transferred to the Mississippi Test Facility where the Saturn Two Rockets were being tested. During this time Fran continued her volunteer work and active membership in the local Methodist Churches. In August of 1969 the family survived Hurricane Camille which hit the Gulf Coast by clinging to their roof top throughout the night. They completely rebilt their home and then retired to Coroando, CA. During her years in Coronado, Fran continued her active churchlife where she was an officer in the UMW and leader of the Life in the Spirit Group. Upon her husbands death in 1981 she put her teaching degree to use working for the Coronado United School District. Following the deaths of her husband, mother and youngest daughter she moved to Elon College to live with her daughter Patti. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, Elon, NC.. She is survived by her sisters Phyllis and Carole of Coronado, and brothers Clyde of CT and Donald of AZ, her daughters Cheryl Clearwater, FL and Patti Elon, NC along with four granddaughters Lori Escobar, St. Petersburg, FL, Kari Millard and Kypi Musgrave La Habra, CA and Jennifer Farnham of San Diego, CA, her three great grandchildren Brianna and Andrew Millard La Habra, CA and Krysta Escobar St. Petersburg, FL, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bassett was preceeded in death by her parents Clyde and Yorke Finger, husband H. Edwin Bassett, youngest daughter Lisa Anne Bassett-Farnham and nephew David Pyne. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 20 from 6 to 8 P.M. at Lowe Funeral Home and at other times at the home of her daughter Patty Young. Memorial service for Mrs. Bassett will be held on Thursday, June 21, 11:00a.m. at Fairview United Methodist Church on Osceola Road in Elon. The Reverends Jared Hanson and Ron Gardner will officiate. Burial will be on Saturday, June 23 at the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery in Bethel, CT. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to the Building Fund, Fairview United Methodist Church, 3128 Osceola Rd, Elon, NC 27244. Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., Burlington, NC and Hulls Funeral Home, Bethel, CT served the family with arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at info@lowefuneralhome.com
