Mr. Melvin Franklin "Mel" Berngartt, age 90, a resident of the Village of Brookwood, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the Hospice Home after a period of declining health. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Maurice Mark Berngartt and the late Sadye Samler Berngartt . Mel was a U.S. Army veteran and served in the Army Air Corps WWII as a radiosonde operator from February 1943 to January 1946. After returning home he completed his education at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1949. He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1952. He spent most of his career years as a federal employee working for the General Accounting Office and was a Deputy Associate Director in their International Division upon his retirement in 1987. While working for GAO he traveled to many foreign countries and had two long term overseas assignments accompanied by his family in Frankfurt, Germany and New Delhi, India. He was a past member of the American Institute of CPA's, the Maryland Association of CPA's, and the Seven Lakes Kiwanis Club. He was an active member of the American Contract Bridge League and the Burlington/Alamance Bridge Club. He obtained his Life Master in Duplicate Bridge in 2011and achieved a level of Bronze Life Master with 708 points. Mel is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Williams "Peggy" Berngartt whom he was joyously married to for over 64 years; a son, Joseph Berngartt of Parma, OH; three daughters, Mary "Candy" McLendon and husband, Arthur, of Winston-Salem, NC, Meg Olexik and husband, Chuck, of Cary, and Diane Anderson and husband, Steve, of Hillsborough; eight grandchildren, Frank Young and wife Celeste, Kristin Ades and husband Joe, Rachel Berngartt, Rebecca Mercader and husband Rodrigo, Ann-Marie Pinto and husband Frank, Lisa Olexik, Mark Olexik, and Stephanie Anderson. He also has a fan club of nine great grandchildren, Alexandria Young, Mary Ellen Young, Logan Ades, Melody Ades, Nora Ades, Paisley Ades, Owen Pinto, Grant Pinto and Max Pinto. A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Graham, NC by Rev. Briant Cullinane, OFM Conv. Inurnment will be at Salisbury National Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 10:45 AM Tuesday morning prior to the service at the church.
